North Park Ends Season Well!

The lost boys and allihopa teams are on their way back home from the last tournament of the fall from champaign, il.

Last night we stayed in a local congregational church that was built back in 1920. To save some cash and spend some more time together, we had an amazing pasta dinner together. The nights festivities began with stefan taking off his shirt, and busting out a beautiful "happy birthday" to Julie who turned 22. Others climbed on the roof, while still others checked out champaign and did a little iceskating... Ask Neal about that one.

Most of the crowd was asleep by 10pm and despite a crazy annoying beep that luke Peterson tried to kill, we all slept well and a little late. Thinking we had a game at 8:30am, and being more than 20 minutes from the fields, we got up around 6:45... Little did we know that all the pool winners had a first round bye. So, we had about two hours before our game so while the ladies found their fields locked down in champaign, we boys enjoyed a lazy Sunday morning breakfast at Dunkin and Hardees. The ladies eventually were able to get onto their fields and after a first round loss, our ladies were into the 5th place Bracket. At this point I am unsure who they beat to get through the 5th place semis, but they ended up taking fifth place over someone and at least Illinois (13-0).

The tounament finish for our girls was good, especially considering the weather they were thrown (30-40mph gusts and light rain to start the morning).

The boys arrived back at the fields around 9:15 and got to the business of warming up with intentionality. The winds at this point were only beginning to pick up with gusts around 10-15mph. All of our fields were running accross the wind making there no clear advantage going either up or down the field.

First up was Iowa first split squad in the quarters. They came out with sound fundamental and clear intention of being a team dedicated to work the disc slowly and methodically through our cup to score... Sadly (for them), this strategy was lacking because our cup, though allowing multiple breaks through it, forced too many passes for the wind that was blowing across our fields. The gusts were now getting into the 30-35mph range and though still just across the field; we would trap them on the sideline and eat their attempts to crash the cup. Now, we did not have this strategy. From the very first touch of our warm up, I employed a different strategy that was not going to rely on sound fundamental or patience. We were going to jack the disc deep every single time we were less than 20/30 yards from the endzone. It didn't matter if their was a reciever or not. And holy crap did this piss off Iowa. Their main handler became increasingly frustrated and more than a few times on the sideline said, "come on guys, this team fu$king sucks!". We broke them first and after a few more I was completely inside this guys head... He called a travel a few times on jake, kuni while on the goal time, and even me twice before I finally called one on him. I was an idiot though and called "foul" as he called the same on me. I said, "I'm sorry, I meant to say 'travel'", to which he flipped out and said, "you called 'foul' and cannot change your call". I disgreed and forced him to take the disc back. He threw it away and I then jacked it deep and two passes later we scored. As he and I passed each other following the point, he said, "that was fuc@ing bullshit. Learn how to play college ultimate". I walked up to him with a smile on my face and in an attempt to cool him down, put my hands on his shoulder. He immediatly through my hands off him and said, "get the fu&k off me!". I backed off and decided that being in his head was alright. We would win the game 12-5.

Next up was Illinois X and we employed the same strategy as before, but this time we elected to be more fair to our rookies and give them a chance to price themselves. To the point of even lossing the game if it so be it, we divided our returners into and O set and D set. The rookies would take 3 or 4 spots on the line each time no matter what. They played so well and all began to step it up. Illinois would get the first break, but before the half was taken we fought back to take it at 7-5 right before soft came on to force the game to 9. Coming out on d, our line was able to break them after nearly 10minutes. The same line stayed in for game point. Burke pulled the disc and forcing another turn, burke picked up and his justin up the line and seconds later Tony had the game winning grab and this game us the birth to the finals.

Illinois Y tried to fight off the other Iowa team in the other semis and couldn't get the needed W. Or would Iowa and north park in the finals.

We would loss the flip, but get what we wanted by being on offense first. We had figured with the winds now up to 40mph gusts and steady blow of at least 20mph, that the game might not get to half and even if it did, the game would go to hard cap. We start by scoring first, then we would win as long as we never for broken.

The first point Iowa broke us despite having two goal line attempts. We would score next and then give up an easy one. They would get their second break and their sidelines poured onto the field feeling they had secured not only the momentum, but the eventual victory. We were not done fighting, but had also said that we would not call lines any different than the last game. If we were going to win things it would not be because our returners did all the work. We would bring or back to 3-3 next, but we traded points all the way to 6-6. With a chance to get the break again, we choked and then realized we had not figured out whether this would be a game to 13 (and thus it should be half) or if it should be to 15 (which we prefered because softcap had already sounded ). With the game already decided to go to 9, we flipped for the choice and they won. It would be half at that point and we had to break or face losing in 5 minutes because of hard cap.

We pulled the disc and were able to get the turn but were a long way off the fields. I wasn't on to provide the huge huck but it didn't matter cause stefan took charge and jacked the disc deep. The Iowa sideline nearly caught the disc thinking it was going out, but somehow justin came down with the disc. Justin dished it and got it back quick inches off the goal line. A quick argument over whether he was in or not ensued and then the next moment with over 5 Iowa guys crowding the goal line John Krat was able to pull the disc in from justin and we were at 7 all! Hard cap was looming and it looked as though this might just be universe point...

10.25/26.2008 - Fallout - Lost Boys (Championship final point) from luke johnson on Vimeo.

I stepped on the field with Stefan, Abram, Justin, Burke, Tony, and Luke Peterson (playing in his final NPU tournament). We knew what we had to do. We were able to pin Iowa on the sideline but they had adopted the same strategy as we had. Their main handler wound up and threw it out of bounds. We tried to convert and with the chance to go up 8-7, we dropped the disc on the goal line after I threaded it through their cup. This actually worked out to be in our advantage because after another few seconds hard cap blew. They would throw it deep this time and get massive yardage as I couldn't get to their sideline guy who recieved the pass in time. He dished it to one of their less talented guys and I got right tight on him with the mark. He would throw it away after a lengthy debate over whether his pass was caught or hit ground first. I would throw it deep one more time, but their cup made it impossible for me to rip the desired backhand. I launched a flick deep but it sailed out on the sideline a good 20 yards up from the endzone. We clamped down hard with Stefan on the mark and Abram on the point. Their handler wanted to huck it but the mark was too straight up and thus he swung it directly into the wind. One of the less experienced handlers from Iowa then, with an open look, couldn't resist hucking it backhand. Unfortunately his throw was too weak and it bladed badly as it was released as an outside in. It traveled no more than 25 yards.

This would be the last point played. I got into position as quickly as I could and picked up the disc for a backhand huck, but they again forced me flick with the wind coming across left to right. I saw Stefan and threw up a prayer pretty early in the count. In that moment Stefan came up bigger than he has ever come up before (at least in my two years playing with him). Timing it perfectly Stefan pulled the disc down over his guy a few steps into the endzone. His face was that of pure joy and following a massive spike, North Park celebrated it's second fall tournament championship.

Dinner making party

Correction... Girls went 2-2

Their final two games of the day were losses to both Iowa 6-10 and
Chicago 9-12.

-luke johnson

8-0 for the day

More updates coming later... But both teams went 4-0 and look good for
tomorrow.

Illinois defeated 13-10. Lost boys go 3-0

Two more wins

Allihopa is now in the midst of their third round against Iowa (last
seed in their pool). The winds began to pick up at our field site (30
minutes north of the girls) so I suspect they were being handed a lot
of zone defense. Their punt and set up down wind zone worked fairly
well and took it to the split Illinois squad 12-3.

The boys just finished their second game after enjoying a nice little
bye that allowed a grocery store run for beef jerky, oatmeal cookies,
honey roasted peanuts, regular peanuts, coke, donuts, cereal bars, and
a few other items. This last game was against Loyola from Chicago who
we pummeled last year at Sectionals. They had most of their same crew
back that I remembered and with rising winds, the game began to trade
points in the second half. But we had already built a nice lead so
even giving up a break in the second half didn't hurt us too much. The
final score was 13-6.

Next up Illinois Z for us and not sure who the ladies will play after
Iowa.

First rounds done

Allihopa just trounched Michigan State 11-2 and our boys finished off
Northwestern 13-2 about an hour ago. We are currently in our bye and
the ladies are fighting Illinois.

Boys over the Men!

Some said it wouldn't happen some said it was too much to overcome.
Many though the most recent graduates returning would push the alumni
even further into a place of domination. The roster was bigger than it
has ever been and the alumni were nothing less than ready.

But a quick break to set things off would put the alumni in their
place. One more after points traded would put the Boys up 3-1. Half
would be taken at 9-6 and the cocky Boys cheered loud and quickly in
an effort to exert some sort of mental domination... But the alumni
were crafty and the old men of the team were not ready to be
dominated. The alumni brought it to within one (11-10) after getting
another up wind point with less than 20 minutes left to play before cap.

But the alumni couldn't keep the momentum. They battled until it was
16-12 and only seconds left on the clock. As the buzzer sounded the
game would either end right their with the Boys taking 17-11 or the
alumni could muster a late game surge. The later proved true and the
alumni pulled to the Boys on game point 16-13. As hard as they could,
the current lost boys proved victorius on a final point from Hirsh to
Stefan; 17-13 Lost Boys.

Thanks for everyone who came out and played and thank you to those who
came to watch. Stay tunes for a highlight from the game at some point
this week when I finish my misterms and papers...

Off to bed.

Allihopa takes 9th and Lost Boys take 8th

Allihopa ended the tournament with a 9th place finish in a final game
that was one to watch. On a field running directly into the wind our
ladies decided to start on D after winning the toss. Little did they
realize this decision would come back and bit them in the butt as the
25mph wind was only allowing downwind points as it forced discs into
the ground or floaty. The ladies traded points until it was 8-8 and
they knew they needed the upwind break to win. Taking a strategy from
a wise man on the lost boys team, the ladies put the disc in Aune's
hand and let her rip it deep against the wind after getting the turn.
Two failed attempts eventually found one last rip 30 yards out to a
streaking Sarah who pulled the disc down and the up wind point to make
it 9-8 north park. They would pull the disc, allow Arkansa to move the
disc up the field and then nearly put it in for their own upwind
point. But a sweet D from Aune would deny them a chance to force the
game beyond the softcap of ten. Kelly would grab the disc and huck it
long and two turns later Arkansa had it in the middle of their own
starting goal line. Kelly was on the dump handler who made the strike
cut and then started to cut back for the around. Kelly anticipated it
and lunged forward for the game winnig callahan 10-8. They would leave
the field of 20 lady teams as ten ninth overall.

The lost boys on the otherhand managed to take home 8th place after
beating Minnesota Duluth in the prequarters. This gave us a birth into
the 8 team championship bracket against Illinois.

I personally was not feeling all that confident against Illinois as
they had taken their A division pool the other day against both Kansas
and Colorado. I figured we would score a few points before caving as
they were looking really good the day before.

First point we came out hard on D and broke them as we go a lucky
break when one of their players (Lamp), dropped the disc ten yards out
from our attacking goal line. I picked up the disc ad being forces
backhand broke my guy to Stefan for the first of a couple breaks.
Illinois came back hard on us after scoring a fairly easy O point next
and went up 3-1. We got chilly and went on a run that led to taking
half 8-5. I was stunned and nearly didn't believe what I was
witnessing. With what I believe was the same score from regionals at
half time, we were again up three huge breaks. Burke would speak wise
words in the huddle reminding guys that we had had Illinois on the
ropes before to then let things unravel back at Sectionals... Ah, it
was like the game had already been written.

We could not put anything in. Illinois honestly didn't do anything
different. They played no harder and did nothing spectacular against
us. We simply dropped the disc over and over and over... Fundamentals
under pressure and we couldn't come up with anything. Break after
break and soon they had not only tied things up but went five in a row
to go up on us 10-8. Attempting to rally we scored making it 10-9, but
that was all we could muster. I believe the final score was something
like 14-9 or 15-10...

We took some time after that game to reflect ad realize that we could
no longer choke in second halfs. It was also a chance to remember how
far we had come this season already. That said, we were really just
playing 9 guys for the entire game with no first years getting in to
my knowledge.

Our next game would be semis for 5th place and we took the game as an
opportunity for our rookies to get some serious playing time. Nearly
being bageled in the first half and letting off one callahan (the
first score of the game) and nearly another, we finally scored a
downwind point. The second half as more of the same as northwestern
simply threw cup on our rookies both directions and capitalized rather
easily every time a turn was forced. It was a bitter game and a tough
one. Our starters struggled in giving the support they needed to give
and the few returners that were playing had a hard time staying
positive after so many turns... That game ended with it being 15-1.

We then had a chance to play Iowa in a 7th place game that we nearly
didn't play and in retrospect, probabyl shouldn't have. We decided
upon the game being only to five as we needed to get back for our
alumi game. In a field directly into the wind it would all be up to
the toss that mr. Peterson lost (punk!). But we had managed to secure
a funky upwind point rule that awarded 2 points instea of one.

The first point would be a tough one that we would recieve and be
forced to work against the win. With no half Iowa had made the right
choice to start upwind. After two nearly caught discs deep, we
eventually allowed the first score. We would trade for two and then
the heartbreaking upwind poor was given to Iowa after lazy D; 4-1
Iowa. We tries hard to get the next upwinder, but we failed after weak
fundamentals again snuck into to cause a turn. Iowa would score and we
would lose our second game in a row after scoring only one... A
crappy way to end an otherwise awesome and succesful tournament.

So, that is the key north park. Remember the good. Remember what we
did well and how far we have come. But, also remember we are not done
fighting yet. We are not done getting better. We are not done working
harder than everyone else.

Returners, we need to be better examples. We need to teach and model
what we want to see on the field. There is no trick to this as you
already have a substantial base of skills. But, you have to work
harder. You have to want to finish your north park season knowing you
were the best you could be. If you're not graduating, you need to
continue to step up in leadership and make your presence known on the
field and on the sidelines. This cannot be taught. This is either in
you or it isn't. I believe it to be something you all have, so start
playing like the bad asses you are.

Rookies, you have a ton of pressure on you and I know what it feels
like. I was once there. But I quickly discovered I didn't want to
remain in that place. I didn't want to be the person people expected
to drop the disc or throw it away. I decided early on in my ultimate
career that I wanted to be a play maker. I want you to know that I and
all of the returners believe in you. You are the future of this
program. We believe that you are more than capable of being great...
Greater than even we are now! Believe it. And then, once you do,
start owning the responsibility of what that means. Work harder
outside of practice. Throw until your hands hurt and your arm cannot
throw another disc. Run until you puke. Begin bidding for everything
you are able to bid for. Work until your blood and sweat are poured
out on the soil.

We have work to do North Park and I for one am willing to fight until
I have nothing left for the privilege of standing beside you.

Be proud North Park, be proud.

Update

The ladies still don't know who they will be playing, but I suspect
that after returning from the party, they might have gleened that
information.

The boys on the otherhand only just earned the right to play into the
championship bracket by beating St. Olaf. If we would have lost that
cross over then we would be in the 13th place bracket. Our opponent
tomorrow morning at 8:30am will be Northern Lights from Minnesota. We
had played them last year while at Frostbite and lost universe point
first thing Sunday morning and they in doing so knocked us out of the
championship bracket. We now have that opportunity and I would love to
see it happen.

After todays redemption against Dayton, who had eliminated us at
Regionals last spring, I'm feeling a north park uprising taking place.

If we beat MN then we play one of the big schools in quarters, but
that is a long way off. We already did better than we were expected to
do and now it is a matter of doing even better.

North Park Saturday Wrap-up

Our ladies began their day against Minnesota where our ladies ended up
losing on a hard cap 12-11. This was a frustrating game where our
ladies were up 11-8 and they then let Minnesota crawl their way back in.

Allihopas next game was against Wisconsin Y that ended 13-4 in our
ladies favor. Wisconsin made qaurters at this last years nationals, so
taking it so well against their split sqaud was pretty impressive.

Next was Wisconsin Milwaukee where our ladies nearly got beaten again
like Minnesota, but toughed it out and took the game 11-9.

Their cross over was against carlton's syzygy where our ladies went up
2-0 to start things before the dominate carleton program took over and
finished our girls off 13-3.

The boys finished the day against St. Olaf where we were the underdog
but quickly took control with solid O from Burke and Abram. We would
move into quarterfinals and now have ?, but we are guaranteed to be
in the top 8!

Lost Boys @ No Wisconsequences

Most of the Lost Boys left chicago this morning for the tourney. As
for Burke, Prevost and myself (luke p) we decided we'd rather drive to
Wisconsin last night without a clue as to where we'd stay. We ended up
pitching a tent at some random church... It was sweet. We woke up and
went to denny's... Also SWEET.

Alright. Let's talk about frisbee. Our first team we played against
was Dayton the team we lost to at last years regionals. Only one word
can describe this game... REDEMPTION. After a hard fought victory
(13-10) the Lost Boys went global and played the Canadian team McGill.
The Canucks came short and the American bald eagles prevailed on
universe point (11-10). AMERICA! After gaining momentum from our first
two games we beat Carleton GOP (13-10) in a game that allowed us to
run a rookie line for a few D points. It was fun and was some good
experiences for the young guns.

Next on tap is a crossover game against St. Olaf.

Another tournament in the books: Western

This last weekend our North Park boys and girls headed down south to the Western Classic, a tournament that didn't even have a womens division last year and where our boys going A and B took the tournament. This year things were a little different. Our ladies brought home the bacon with a dominating run on some very new lady programs. Their first two games against Knox college and Western (the host team) went something along the lines of 26 straight unanswered points. Their third game against Illinois State went about the same way as 13-1. And in their last game they let only 3 points be scored by the Western Alumni. As there were only 5 womens teams present, the weekend was over once the round-robin was over. So, even though the ladies put on a perpetual clinic, the boys didn't have the same kind of competition.

As the number one seed, North Park Y went 3-0 in pool play, with wins over Lewis 13-6, Southern Illinois 11-9, and Western Illinois B 13-4. North Park X was seeded second overall, but they lost their first game on universe point to Illinois State Y 10-11. They were not detered though and fought through both Northern Illinois and Augustana 13-9 and 13-4 respectfully. And after Illinois State Y lost to Northern, there was a lovely three way tie but North Park came out on top in the point differential and thus drew the 1v1 cross-over of Truman State X (the number one from the D pool).

The 1v1 cross-overs were rough as North Park Y drew the C1 and host team; Western. Going A/B at their own tournament would allow them to put their best against our split squads and this weekend we were simply not enough to hold off their experience. NPU Y would drop this game 6-13 and thus earn the 3 seed in the Championship bracket. On the other 1v1, NPU X would lose their second universe point game to Truman State X 12-13 and take back the 4 seed in the Championship bracket.

Sunday morning pit Southern Illinois against NPU X who had just managed a win over a higher seeded Illinois X in pre-quarters. This was the same team that our Y team beat only 11-9 in a close first round pool play game. For the third time in the tournament, our X team would find itself forcing double game point and for the third time in the tournament our X team would lose a universe point game; this time 12-13. Southern would lose their next game to Western would find themselves in the finals. This would shove our X team into the 7th place game against Illinois Chicago, and after a 13-11 victory would take home 7th place.

On the otherside of the bracket, NPU Y was remembering their late Saturday afternoon loss to Western and wanting to avenge it. The game out hard against Illinois State Y, who was arguably the better Illinois freshman squad. NPU Y would take them down 13-8 and face Truman State X. Interesting point of note is that Truman did not attend with two teams and thus this was their A team... NPU Y would do their best, but end up falling short 8-13 to the team who would eventually be crowned the new Western Champion (over Western 15-6). The Y team would then play Southern Illinois for the second time all weekend and do one better than their last victory over them going 13-10. They would earn 3rd place.

The weekend was not a failure, but to most it wasn't success. The bitterness of being handed back to back weekend losses is something that our boys are not wanting to be acustom to, and I for one believe that to be the right sentiment. We are better than this boys, and we simply need to work a little bit harder and focus a little longer.

North Park goes 2-1, 3-0, and 3-0

Our two boys teams took their pools and are now in their cross over
games despite losing one game. The ladies did the same.
